Welcome to the Sixth year of Math Challenge at Rosa Parks!

We have written up some frequently asked questions for the benefit of new families. For returning families, the program will be run like last year. See the section under "How do I sign up?"

What is Math Challenge?

Math Challenge is a set of 15 challenges published approximately every two weeks. The goal of Math Challenge is to enrich the school curriculum and to encourage different ways of problem solving.

Math Challenge is a PTSA sponsored program that is

  • open to all students, grades K-5
  • free to participate
  • requires sign up at the beginning of the year (September 9- October 6)
  • run by parent volunteers

The questions come from a team of parents at Math in Action. The guidelines will adhere to Math in Action, but implementation, schedule and rules at Rosa Parks differ slightly.

Rules are subject to change during the year and will be shared through PUMA Info.

How do I sign up?

There is a required sign up this year for Math Challenge.

Sign up will be open between September 9 and October 6.

What happens after sign up?

  • Check the schedule below for when the next challenge will be available.
  • On challenge available date, download and print the latest challenge from Math in Action
  • Read the general instructions on first page of Challenge 1, this will help set the tone and intent for all challenges for the year.
  • Show us your work! Attach extra sheets so we can see how you arrived at the solution.
  • Turn in your solution with your work to your teacher. Please fill in your name, grade, teacher’s name and parent’s email clearly – without proper identifying information, we will not be able to consider your submission.
  • Graded solutions will be returned within a week to 10 days through your teacher.
  • Instead of weekly prizes, points will be assigned for every eligible solution. See "How do I win a prize?" below.

  • Have at least 50% of attempted questions accurate

Participants who earn points between 13 and 15 during the school year will be rewarded a grand prize at the end of the year.

Participants who earn between 10 and 12 points during the school year will be rewarded a prize at the end of the year.

Parcipants who turned in minimum of 1 math challenge will be rewarded a participation prize at the end of the year.

Only one prize per participant.

What if I missed the deadline?

Solutions will be posted as per date in the schedule. Please feel free to submit challenges till the solution is posted. However, to be fair to all participants, any challenges submitted after the due date and time will not earn any points.
